Cross of gold speech

was a famous speech given by William_Jennings_Bryan at the convention of the Democratic Party of the United States on July_9 1896 in opposition to the proposed pegging of the value of the United_States_dollar to the gold_standard. It bears its name from the famous line: :''You shall not press down upon the brow of labor this crown_of_thorns, you shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold.''
